Alexandre Sokurov retrospective at the Jeu de Paume
Part of the always inspiring Festival d’Automne program comes this retrospective of the contemporary Russian director and Cannes Film Festival regular Alexandre Sokurov. Titled ‘Hidden Pages’, the program includes a number of projects never-before-seen in France: Élégie de la vie (2006), Leningrad. Rétrospective. 1957-1990 (2010), Il nous faut du bonheur (2010). Also, the director has been given ‘carte blanche’ in January (11-17) to introduce us to some contemporary Russian documentary filmmakers including Edgar Bartenev, Sergueï Karandochov and Alexandre Rastorgoniev. This is a rare chance to immerse yourself in Sokurov’s unique cinematic style, known for its sombre, spiritual mood and exceptionally long takes (Sokurov is responsible for cinemas’s first unedited film, The Russian Ark: 90 minutes/ one take!).
