ART: Gavin Turk at Galerie Almine Rech
One of the YBA’s original bad boys exhibits 72 clay busts from a new series En Face. The brown clay heads started off as a uniform series of busts of the artist, but owe their current varied forms, with martini glasses implanted in some, long tongues protruding from the mouths of others, to Turk’s interactive performance piece called ‘The Bust Party’, held earlier this year in his studio, in which he invited his guests to manipulate the still wet clay. By inviting the public to become a part of the creative process, Turk questions the role of the artist and the idea of authorship. The title of each of the busts is an anagram of the artist’s name (Raving Kut, Gavring Tuk, Gun Irk Vat) further reinforcing Turk’s manipulation of identity.
