Art Spiegelman at the BPI
Coming up for the spring, this exhibition – developed for and inaugurated at this year’s prestigious Angoulême International Comics Festival – presents an exceptionally wide-ranging retrospective devoted to the legendary American comic book “auteur” Art Spiegelman, author of the Pulitzer prize winning graphic novel Maus. His work also includes RAW, the avant-garde comics anthology Spiegelman started with his wife Françoise Mouly; cartoons for the print media, notably the New Yorker; children’s books; the story and sets for a “comics” opera (Crime Doesn’t Pay) and the hard-hitting chronicle In The Shadow of No Towers, his reaction to the 9/11 tragedy in New York. For the first time, several hundred original documents of all kinds – drawings, sketches, research, photographs and comic book panels including the full set of Maus panels, i.e. more than 700 items! – will be displayed in the same place at the same time, providing a vibrant testimony to the career of this singular yet universal artist.
Wed 21 Mar-Mon 21 May. Noon-10pm. Closed Tue. Free entry.
