CIRCUS: Propaganda at Théâtre de la Cité Internationale
Part of the Paris Quartier d’été festival, Propaganda is an avant-garde circus show created by the company Acrobat, founded by a couple of muscly Australian aesthetes-cum-revolutionaries, Simon Yates and Jo-Ann Lancaster. ‘Be Kind’, ‘Eat Your Veggies’, ‘Ride a Bike’, ‘Garden Nude’… inspired by Marx, Gandhi and Laurel & Hardy, Yates and Lancaster have chosen an alternative lifestyle and attitude to consumption. Applying their ideas to the work, the couple have created an organic, sustainable circus act to address the problems of class struggle, pollution, and individualism. Politics meets acrobatics, with an Australian sense of humour. Propaganda is the antidote for glamourous circus trends: no pose, no decor, no costumes, to go straight to what is essential: the human.
15 July-15 Aug. Wed-Sat 8.30pm, Sun 4pm.
