KUNITORAYA 1 REOPENS

 In > eat & coffee

The Rue St Anne just lost its star address. Earlier this week the city’s best udon bar reopened at 1 rue Villedo, on the corner of Rue Richelieu adjacent to Palais Royal. The smart new space is long and narrow, with raw brick walls and lots of windows on to the street giving it a slight aquarium vibe. Two large wooden communal tables welcome diners, and the menu (thought not the prices) remains the same. We still don’t know how to choose between the Kamaten-Udon (vegetable and prawn tempura, quail egg, udon, hot broth: 20€) or the same over a bowl of rice. As well as the udon in hot broth or the rice dishes, choose from udon served with cold sauces, fried pork, or Japanese omelette, and there’s a lunchtime menu with your choice of udon plus, for 7€ extra, a generous onigiri, omelette, plus fried dish of the day. The flavours are still magnificently precise, fresh and tasty. Finish up at neighbouring Télescope for an extra good coffee. And don’t forget Kunitoraya’s second more upmarket address at 5 rue Villedo; another don’t miss Paris spot!
Noon-2.30; 7-9.30pm. Closed Wed.
