'Speckled' by Neil Atherton

 In > art culture design

Part of the Mois de la Photo’s ‘Off’ program, this series of photos by Paris-based UK photographer and curator Neil Atherton captures the blank reality of mundane places and objects, found in peripheral locations of big cities that are often overlooked, forgotten or abandoned. ‘Speckled’ is part of a larger series ‘Expired’ which employs different photographic formats (35mm, medium format, Polaroid, etc.) all of which are out-of-date. The random splashes of colour, a combination of chemistry, chance, light and time, interrupt the relationship between the viewer and the subject. This spontaneity is contrary to the perfection of modern digital photography, in which surface and texture are transparent, even invisible.
