The much anticipated new feature from Terrence Malick (‘Badlands’, ‘Days of Heaven’, ‘The Thin Red Line’) will premiere at Cannes today before opening nationally on Wed. Expected to be a mysterious, metaphysical trip, ‘The Tree of Life’ is the impressionistic story of a Midwestern family in the 1950s and follows the life journey of the eldest son Jack (played as an adult by Sean Penn) through the innocence of childhood to his disillusioned adult years as he tries to reconcile a complicated relationship with his father (Brad Pitt). Jack finds himself a lost soul in the modern world, seeking answers to the origins and meaning of life while questioning the existence of faith. Malick has also developed a strange interactive website for the film ‘Two Ways Through Life‘, which allows you to explore the film via ‘the mother’s way’ or ‘the father’s way’.
