Legendary Afrobeat drummer with the mighty Fela Kuti in Africa 70, Tony Allen has been highly sought after since the death of his former boss in 1997, notably by Damon Albarn as part of The Good, The Bad, and The Queen, as well as with Charlotte Gainsbourg, Air, Grace Jones, Manu Dibango, and Groove Armada. A Paris resident for some time, he has been the architect of the Africa Express concerts (most recently seen at this year’s Paris Plage) which aim to introduce African and European musicians to each other on the same stage. Still going strong at 69, he put out an album this year titled Secret Agent, a raw afrobeat jam. CG
