VOODOO at the Fondation Cartier
The next exhibition to open at the Fondation Cartier in April is dedicated to the West African sculptural tradition of voodoo objects. ‘Vodun’ is an ancient religious cult and philosophical tradition originating from the Republic of Benin, and more widely the ‘Slave coast’ of West Africa, and still active today. Through the slave trade of the 17th and 18th centuries, this religious cult was brought to the Caribbean as well as North and South America where it mixed with Catholicism as well as other religious traditions. The Fondation Cartier will present for the first time an exceptional group of Vodun sculptures from the collection of Anne and Jacques Kerchache, in a scenography conceived by Enzo Mari, one of the great masters of Italian design. The voodoo theme will be carried over to the foundation’s Nomadic Nights program with a series of events based on the theme of mystery in which enigmas, secrets and the cult of the strange will be scrutinised.
