ART: Chris Avery at the Plateau

 In Events

Continuing their string of excellent shows, the Plateau brings us ‘Onomatopoeia, part 1′ by up-and-coming UK artist, Charles Avery. For his first solo exhibition in France, he brings us a piece of ‘The Islanders’, a project he has been working on since 2004 that creates and documents an imaginary island. Onomatopoeia is the capital city, where the artist/explorer begins his journey. Using sculpture, large-scale drawings and installation the gallery space is transformed into the fantastical, but uncannily familiar, world of the island. Avery mixes the childlike joy of mapping out a make-believe land with ascerbic observations of the modern world. His imaginary anarchic society is unable to decide on a guiding ideology, creating a surreal vaccum of meaning, laced with humour. You can meet the artist on Thu 17 June, 7.30pm, when he’ll be in discussion with curator and critic Nicolas Bourriaud.
Until 8 Aug. Wed-Fri, 2-7pm; Sat, Sun, noon-8pm.
