Gig highlights 4-10 Oct
The month of October signals not only the end of the summer festival season, but also the start of the winter gig bonanza, and the first full week of the month is somewhat of a humdinger. First, let’s take the proverbial elephant out of the room: MGMT‘s 3-day love in at the Bataclan is undoubtedly going to receive most of the attention, and perhaps rightly so. But despite their crowd-pleasing anthems, the New York duo have garnered a reputation as one of modern pops more disappointing live events. Fear not. There’s a trio of electro-pop hipsters lying in wait with smaller profiles but possibly a greater desire to get you ‘up off a dat thing’. A fan of Talking Heads and Hot Chip? Don’t miss London’s We Have Band, taking the roof of Point Ephémère. They should act as a suitable warm-up act for arguably the week’s hidden highlight: Of Montreal have been making fine electro-pop for over a decade without ever really making waves (this side of the Atlantic at least). But, indie disco classics like ‘Disconnect the Dots’ will be making the floorboards at La Cigale bend in no time. Then there is the obligatory Friday night treat. Anyone with a funky bone in their body should at least look into the idea of thrashing away their week’s frustrations at newly reopened Social Club; 2009 Mercury Prize nominees Friendly Fires will be looking to leave no wallflowers and no drink un-spilled. And if your midnight oil is looking a little low come Friday, follow up with Horse Feathers at the Flèche, who have the harmonies and the delicately delivered ballads to help rediscover the weekend spirit.
