LOUXOR CINEMA
The landmark Louxor cinema has reopened its doors in the sketchy Barbés neighborhood with a full program of new releases, arthouse and foreign films, festivals, educational courses, special events for children and even an art deco restaurant and bar serving organic snacks, plus a terrace overlooking the Sacré-Coeur. Famous for its neo-Egyptian motifs, the Louxor first opened in 1921 and wowed its audience with silent films and live orchestras. Fast-forward to the early 80s when the theater had lost its lustre, and by the end of the decade the building stood empty. Today, the theater’s three screens are back in business including the main one with over 340 seats, gold-tinted walls with painted hieroglyphs, and an art-deco skylight. Movies currently screening include the new Hannah Arendt biopic and Michel Gondry’s latest L’Ecume des Jours. (Single movie tickets go for €9, or make the matinée before noon for just 5 euros. Louxor cards are good for either 5 or 10 shows (€30-€50) and reduced price/group tickets are also available.)
