Sophie Bramly '1981 & +' at 12 Mail

Creative all-rounder (Google her) Sophie Bramly started her career as a photographer back in the 80s, documenting the beginnings of hip-hop in the Bronx. Friends with Afrika Bambaataa, Futura, Kurtis Blow and Crazy Legs, she took photographs of these legends in the making. ‘It’s their obsession with showing off that I photographed for a few years. I studied with utmost attention and pleasure the way they staged themselves and payed attention to self-representation, with an interest for what hid behind this. At times they appeared fragile as if nude, and I found them touching and magnificently dazzling. On stage they had sparkling outfits and were admired by the crowd, but most of them lived with their mothers, were already fathers and knew how to laugh about how ludicrous the situation was…’ The show, accompanied by a limited-edition monograph, opens at 12 Mail next Fri 17 June, 6-9pm.
