This selection from the Montreal based festival dedicated to films about art opened yesterday at the Louvre. The English-language highlights: the BBC documentary David Hockney: The Bigger Picture follows the artist as he returns to England after 25 years in Hollywood thus telling the story of an unusual homecoming but  also an intimate portrait of what inspires Hockney as his time runs out (Thu 27 Jan, 6.30pm); About Jenny Holzer by director Claudia Müller who followed the American conceptual artist over a ten-year period, at work and in numerous exhibitions, gaining a unique perspective on her work (Sat 29 Jan, 4.30pm); Robert Wilson’s 2009 homage to Japanese dancer and choreographer, Suzushi Hanayagi Kool – Dancing in My Mind (Sun 30 Jan, 4.30pm); Downtown 81 starring Basquiat and New York in the early 80s (Sun 30 Jan, 6.30pm); and on Wed 2 Feb, 8pm, the French première from the fresh-from-Sundance feature The Mill & The Cross by Lech Majewski and starring Rutger Hauer, Charlotte Rampling and Michael York, and inspired by Pieter Bruegel’s 1564 epic masterpiece The Procession to Calvary.
