This week's film releases
Notable releases this week, out today: Werner Herzog delivers a 3D documentary Cave Of Forgotten Dreams (La Grotte des rêves perdus) exploring the astonishing Chauvet Cave , a cave in the Ardèche region of France discovered in 1994 and containing the earliest known cave paintings (32,000 BC). Blackthorn, the second film after Nobody Knows Anybody (1999) from Spanish screenwriter Mateo Gil and selected for Tribeca this year is a “classically minimalist” western about the mysterious final years in the life of legendary bandit Butch Cassidy and stars Sam Shepard. But this week our vote goes to Win Win (Les Winners), an hilarious comedy from writer/director Tom McCarthy (The Visitor, The Station Agent), which premiered at Sundance 2011, about disheartened attorney Mike Flaherty (Paul Giamatti) who moonlights as a high school wrestling coach and stumbles across a star athlete through some questionable business dealings while trying to support his family. McCarthy demonstrates a deft touch balancing drama and comedy, broken hearts and poignant humanity.
